So. Much. Hair.

I've curated some photos from my blog to talk hair.  I am notoriously finicky about my hair, and I've been my whole life.  In the grand scheme of things, I realize that hair is just hair.  It'll always grow back.

And yet, I've cried about haircuts.  Oh, how I've cried.  My mom will recall these dramatic times with a note of amusement now, and even regale my boyfriend with tales about how she used to be filled with anxiety every time I told her that I wanted her to take me to get a haircut.  The boyfriend usually will listen and laugh...but with a sad note of recognition.

Due to my hair anxieties, I usually wear my hair long and plain with minimal layers.  In all the above photos, my hair is in it's natural stick straight state.  Admittedly, it looks... kind of crazy.

I'm a big fan of curling my hair cape though.  I'd usually be able to get some nice curl to it that would add some depth.

Looking at these photos, I'm thinking not too shabby!

But then I see a photo like this, and I remember that while I would have occasional good curl days, most of the time my hair would have this stringy/heavy/droopy curl going on.  Feels bad, man.

I recently went in for a haircut, and came out of it unscathed.  Happy even.   I cut some overall length off, particularly off the top layer of hair around the crown of my head.  The above photo shows how this gave my hair a bit more volume on top.

So with this new haircut in place, I decided that I never wanted to go back to heavy droopy curls.  I wanted to pursue volume.  I wanted to pursue some BIG TEXAS HAIR, YA'LL.

The above photo shows an example of some volume I was able to get in my hair.  The haircut is definitely the groundwork for achieving more volume, but I've recently discovered some new products that have helped in my pursuit of big hair:

  1. TIGI Bed Head Queen for a Day Thickening Spray
  2. Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

Into the Gloss had covered the thickening spray to positive reviews, and so I was curious to try it.  I spray it onto my wet hair, then blow-dry with a round brush.  My hair doesn't automatically double to twice it's size, but I feel like it has more fluff to it and takes to the curling iron better than when I was using mousse in my wet hair.

I'll then curl my hair, then apply the Oribe Texturizing Spray all over (even the ends), and scrunch my hair.  I especially focus on spraying the texturizing spray on the hair around the crown of my head.  I'll then take a teasing comb and mercilessly tease (hur hur) my hair, then comb the top layer of hair smooth over the teased portion.

I usually do not even finish with a hairspray since I feel like the Texas summer is too humid for it, and hair spray will become sticky and weigh down my hair and curl.  The dry texturizing spray gives my hair a lot of bounce and lightness that I want to keep!  What's also great about the spray is that in addition to adding volume, it also works somewhat similarly to a dry shampoo and will absorb oil at the root of your hair.  Whereas before I wanted to wash my hair everyday, I can actually go 3 days without washing my hair now.

For even bigger hair, you might want to try the Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray.  I've only tried it once, but my hair looked  in.sane. afterwards.  Since it's a beach spray, it will make your hair a bit more texture-y and slightly sticky though (which is why I ultimately decided to get the dry texturizing spray instead).

And now...we've talked more hair together than you and I would have ever thought.  Go get you some big Texas hair, ya'll.

  3. I love your hair! It's so pretty! Up until I was 7 or 8 my hair went down to my butt, but it hasn't been that long since. I wish I could have it that long but it gets tangled so easily when its long.
