mixing neutrals

sweater dress/tunic, F21. jacket, vintage. boots, dolce vita.

without further adieu, here is the first of our NYC updates. the fiance and i actually arrived in NYC a day earlier than the rest of the crew to spend some time with his cousin and her bf. like issa, i was also very negligent about taking pictures during our trip, but here are a couple from our hotel on our first night in the city.

i find dressing for plane travel a little perplexing at times, especially when travelling from one climate to another, as was the case with this houston to new york flight. but this outfit comfortably took me from the four-hour flight, to the cross-city trek to the hotel where we were put up for the night after a "mixup" with the apartment we rented for our stay, to dinner and drinks in the meatpacking district, to a late night search for toothpaste and an infamous gray's papaya hotdog.

i've never really understood "fashion rules", e.g., no white after labor day, matching your shoes, belt and purse...and especially the one about not mixing neutrals. this is one "rule" i find myself breaking often, as black w/ brown and grey w/ brown happen to be some of my favorite color combinations.

the rest of the nyc updates are gradually coming. we got the first batch of pics from dru, which includes what i think is a pretty spectacular pic of issa that i hope she posts. ;)

EDIT** thanks for dona perfecta for nominating issa's outfit from the last post for her look of the week! go vote :)

  1. I love this colour combo .... it's ideal for fall... beautiful.

As for fashion "rule", I do stick to certain ones... like I don't really like black and brown mixed, I like matching my feet and hands nail polish ... haha etc :S

  2. im glad you broke the so called no mixing neutrals rule as you look fab! i do not follow rules,i follow what works for me as an individual. In terms of what to wear for flying across varying zones:I wear comfy soft layers that I can easily peel off it gets warm or vice versa when it gets hot.

  6. I always thought "fashion rules" were a little contradictory because fashion is kind of about not having or following any rules. I always mix my neutrals as well! I only just heard a bit ago that you weren't supposed to do black and brown but I do it all the time. I wouldn't stop just because it is a so-called "fashion rule." who made theseu p anyways? ahha.

this jacket and the boots were among my favorite purchases over this past year. i'll try to go into detail about the story behind these items in my future posts.

  21. Alot of great stuff here!! I love dolce vita. Only thing is they take forever to mark their shoes down. Great boots and jacket!!

  22. @budgetchic - funny that you mention dolce vita taking forever to mark down their shoes. i first saw the boots on shopbop during last year's winter clearance, but sadly, my size was sold out. i checked the dolce vita site and the boots were still at full retail price, so i waited for the price to drop, while semi-obsessively checking shopbop in case my size reappeared...and one day, there they were in size 6, and discounted even further. i think i ended up paying almost 100 bucks less than retail for these boots!
